There was a poll about a podcast - and my answer is more complicated. I love the RT podcast, so audio sounds great, but when I read substack, I'm not expecting audio. If there was a link to an audio version on this email, I probably wouldn't click it because I'm not doing something where I'm able to listen to a podcast, I'm "doing email", but if I saw a podcast from Gregory Warner in my podcast app I would hit subscribe right away.

Thanks! The way Substack has it set up now, you can subscribe through the email and then have Substack audio go to your podcast player. you don’t need to actually listen on the Substack platform or inside your email inbox. Does that help?

I agree with Ericka, our lives are very compartmentalized based on activity (or my bias indicates that) I go to my podcast to listen to podcasts from APR and others and I listen to them while doing something else (walking, exercising, driving) while reading is a one task-concentration activity. There is a pun for McLuhan somewhere here! So, ok to have a link to the podcasts but the podcast may need to exist as such in my Podcast portfolio since on occasion I would prefer that, so a clear decision needs to be made about the content and the need for podcasting and the cost/challenges.

I know that many news channels, like the Economist or the WAPO offer to listen to their news articles at the same time from their news site so indeed people do that. But then your followers come from an audio world, so how much of a transition to the word world are you considering? Just more questions.

I enjoy reading the newsletters. However, I also really miss hearing audio. Hearing a voice, GW’s in this case, adds so much nuance, and provides a more personalized experience, which I really miss. I would very much welcome that feature back. That being said, I am just thankful of having access to his wonderful work, in any form.

What do people find funny that mystifies you? What institutional behavior or social groups do you want us to try to decode?

In 2012, when I studied abroad in Milan, Italy, Berlusconi was treated as a joke from what I understood. And yet, he continued to win elections until his passing.

As an American, I am constantly comparing Trump to Berlusconi.

I can’t help wondering why some parts of the population keep laughing, while others fuel their power with their vote.

Thank you for this. I'm a geography teacher and decided to check Tett's book out of the library. Loving it, imaging how I can more closely observe the habits of 6th grade culture.

I send my newsletters (and magazine articles, etc) to my Kindle because I hate sitting at my desk reading long stuff. I download podcasts to a portable MP3 player because I listen while working in the kitchen, or shopping, etc. They are truly separate domains

I have to read a lot for work. And I have stacks and stacks of unread books of personal interests that I wish I have time to read. I LOVE your work Gregory Warner! But please... don't make me read more just to immerse in more of the stories you will crank out (well, at least as much as possible anyway). THANK YOU so much for what you do. My note of appreciation is much delayed but I will try to do better in the future!
